Re: Scholarships for Blind Students
If you are in touch with a blind or visually impaired high school senior or college student, you can help that student by providing to him or her the enclosed information about scholarships available from the National Federation of the Blind.
Awards are as follows: A. State scholarships: Two awards up to $1,000 plus expenses paid to the State Convention in Pocatello, April 14-16, 2000. B. National scholarships: Thirty awards up to $21,000 plus an expense paid trip to Atlanta, Georgia, in early July 2000, for the convention of the National Federation of the Blind.
The same form may be used to apply for both state and national scholarships. It may be copied as long as both sides are used together. State applications should be sent to Mary Ellen Halverson, 1301 S. Capitol Blvd., Suite C, Boise, ID 83706. National applications should be sent to Peggy Elliott, 805 Fifth Avenue, Grinnell, IA, 50112. Please note that several items should be attached to the application forms. These should be duplicated and sent both to the State and National Scholarship Chairmen.
Scholarship applicants should note that they are expected to contact a leader of the National Federation of the Blind of Idaho by phone or in person in order to get a letter of recommendation.
The scholarship cash award can be valuable to any college student. However, previous winners tell us that meeting other legally blind students and other competent blind individuals is at least as important to them as the cash. We are looking forward to receiving a number of applications from students planning to enroll in colleges and universities throughout Idaho in the fall of 2000.
Very truly yours,
Mary Ellen Halverson, Chairperson MEH/RW/tmo NFBI Scholarship Committee Encl.
